I WISH there was another option — a school for children with disabilities- in our area!
I have one that I absolutely agree with your take on inclusion. The regular classroom is too overwhelming for him! He ended the year in a self-contained classroom for most of his day, but along with his regular class/peers for times he did well (specials: art, gym, library, and music). They intend to gradually work him back into the regular classroom this year, and I don’t think that is the best thing for him.
My daughter sounds very much like yours. She is going into 6th grade, but is very immature for her age — even though she can converse in a way that leads others to believe she is more mature for her age (echolalia — social scripting). She also has learning disabilities. I do worry about what school will look like for her in Junior High next year. Her peers now know her fairly well after they have gone to school together since 1st grade. She too will most likely continue to need an aide in the classroom.
I feel you mama!
