Wow. I have a mixed adopted daughter with beautiful hair. She was my niece, and I asked her aunts what to get for her hair, but when she was a child she refused to use any of it, and despised it when I would grease and comb her hair. She had an obsession with wanting straight hair - I would use a straightening iron for her only on special occasions. I encouraged her to be proud of her hair as it was - it was absolutely gorgeous!! As an adult now, she has embraced her hair and the proper products to keep it gorgeous and I'm so proud of her.
I cannot say how appalled I am to hear that you have had your hair searched!!!! You are absolutely correct when you say a white person would never imagine having that happen - I never would have.
Thank you for this article, and opening my eyes a bit wider to reality.
The Green Book was something I had no idea of either, and I can imagine how essential it was for traveling! Sadly, it should probably still be around today :(
Wow.
